GPS school bus tracking without hardware
How school bus tracking works using the driver's phone instead of a GPS box, the advantages and trade-offs, and what to check before choosing it.
In short
School bus tracking without hardware uses the GPS in the driver's smartphone instead of a device fitted to the bus. The driver app shares the bus's location while a run is under way, which means no installation, no SIM cards, and tracking that can start as soon as drivers have the app.
How it works
The driver signs in to the driver app and starts the run. From then until the run ends, the phone's location is shared with the system, which works out where the bus is on its route, which stops it has reached, and how far it is from each family's stop.
Advantages
- Nothing to buy, fit or maintain in the bus
- Works with buses you hire or share
- Tracking only while a run is under way, never off duty
- The same phone gives the driver the stops and the route map
What to check
- Drivers have a reasonably recent Android phone or iPhone
- Location is allowed for the driver app
- A phone mount and charger in each bus
- What families see if the phone briefly loses signal

Common questions
Is phone-based GPS accurate enough for school buses?
Yes for this purpose. A modern phone's GPS is usually accurate to a few metres outdoors, which is enough to tell which stop a bus is at and how far away it is.
